This painting lingered unfinished for a long time in my studio. I had painted outlines of the robot on a background, but never filled him in. His arms especially, were just transparent outlines above the horizon--kind of ghostly. Painting on it again, I accidentally dragged my sleeve through the wet black outlines of his arms, "ruining" everything. I liked it! Suddenly I had a theme, and knew what else to do. The robot grabs for his atomic eye "after the blast."
